REVIEWED: TravelPod

TripAdvisor’s travel journal app is great for backpackers, but has it been surpassed by social media?

TravelPodIt’s based on one of the first websites to offer travel blog hosting on the internet, almost 20 years ago, but TravelPod has undergone some changes of late. Now owned by travel giant TripAdvisor, does the multi-platform app and website still have a place in travel?

Backpacker-centric

TravelPod is largely for backpackers. The concept is simple enough, with a dashboard hosting entirely separate blogs for each trip you go on – and write about. Just choose where you stayed and where you went; it’s all a bit like Facebook. And that’s its big problem.

TravelPodReal-time maps

‘Checking-in’ on TravelPod is a great idea – and something it has over other online/app travel journals – but since we have Facebook, it is redundant? It compile a real-time map of where you are and where you’ve been, and it even counts-up the countries you’ve visited, so maybe it does have a place. It even allows uploads from a phone’s camera roll (photo and video), though the design is basic; this is retro blogging with a modern facade.
