Bored with the usual baggy-style travel trousers? Always on the lookout for the most practical and comfortable clothes for all times of year – and to hell with tired old trends – TravGear sampled the Maier Outdoor tights. With a comfortable 4-way stretch and a super-elasticated waistband, they’re designed for any type of travel.

Maier Ophit 2.0 W Outdoor tights: design

The water-resistant fabric has that shiny feel, and when trying on TravGear was worried that the scrunchy fabric could be annoying. Thankfully it was hardly noticeable on wearing. The small concealed pocket is not really much use as it is not big enough to actually fit anything in; a larger option that takes a phone on the thigh would be more useful. We tested a size UK 10 (38) and they were on the large side. On the plus side, that means enough space to wear a base layer underneath in winter while not looking overly big … or to squeeze in an extra course at dinner. However, our tester would go a size down if ordering again.

Maier Ophit 2.0 W Outdoor tights: performance

Tested on a typically variable Icelandic summer day these tights proved most useful. The water repellent nature and their ability to dry quickly when out of the rain was invaluable, while not being overly hot when entering first a museum, then a hotel. The stretch fabric provided a comfortable range of movement for climbing up and over boulders at Iceland’s many waterfall stops, and also provided a good amount of wind protection when up on volcanoes and glaciers.

Maier Ophit 2.0 W Outdoor tights: conclusion

Despite initial reservations about the feel of the fabric, the stretch, comfort, quick-dry, and low weight (400g) means these tights would definitely find their way into our tester’s pack for all kinds of destinations with wild weather.
