Three backpacks for short hikes

You’re off into the great outdoors, but not for long. Here’s what you take.

1 – Montane Featherlite 23

A super-light 23-liter capacity daypack, the Montane Featherlite 23 packs away into a pocket that’s literally part of it. Clever stuff … literally. As such, it’s great for taking along as an option if you need to remove and carry, your outer layers. Inside is a hydration sleeve, outside are attachment loops for walking poles.

2 – Berghaus FreeFlow 25

No-one wants a sweaty back on a hike. Cue the free-flow back system on this 25-liter backpack that prevents wet skin. Inside the consequently curved design you can easily fit a hydration pack. Also includes a rain cover and stretch side pockets.

3 – Deuter GoGo

Some breathable foam around a channel on the back promotes some air movement, though in that regard the Deuter GoGo is not in the same class as the Berghaus. However, this 25-liter backpack does have room for a tablet, hip belts, a chest strap, and even a handy wet pocket for stashing a waterproof after a downpour.
