Reviewed: ProGrade Digital V90 SDXC card (64GB)
It’s not all about capacity. 4K video and advanced camera features make high-speed memory cards like this vital for travel photography
With the latest recording equipment requiring the ability to capture 4K video and multiple quick fire continuous shooting images, TravGear is always on the lookout for SD cards with top performance. This example from a relatively new player on the SD card scene claims read speeds of up to 250MB/s and write speeds of up to 200MB/s. So we put its ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II, U3, Class 10, V90 card to the test.
ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II: speed
Using a Canon 6D, continuous shooting full-sized jpegs at 4.5 fps was smooth, and when shooting in raw+full size jpg it coped as well as any other card of similar specification. Likewise, when placed in a Panasonic Lumix TZ100 there was no hesitation after recording in 4K for 5 minutes; it was ready to shoot again immediately. It demonstrates the power of V90, a spec. that ensures that write speed will not drop below 90MB/s.
ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II: file transfer
The transfer from card to a computer was also a nice surprise. We’re all used to starting the card-to-computer transfer then going for a cup of tea while it completes, but not with this little gem. 5GB moved across to our iMac in just 104 seconds.
ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II: capacity
The SDXC is available in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB so you can choose depending on budget and need. We prefer to use multiple cards when traveling in case of loss or failure. Not that we’re saying this is an issue here, but we prefer to swap-out cards regularly during a trip, just as a precaution, but if you’re shooting 4K video, go for 256GB.
ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II: reliability
While we can’t be conclusive about reliability in a short-term test, TravGear experienced zero problems with this card despite testing it on multiple devices over a few weeks and a couple of trips. It re-formatted each time without delay and worked without problems. ProGrade tells us that its cards are all individually tested prior to sale.
ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II: summary
With the speed and performance to crunch gigabytes and a competitive price compared to other cards of its ilk, it’s a big thumbs up for this SD card from TravGear.
