They lack enough zip pockets for secure travel, but these simple shorts behave well on the hikes, treks and trails
Travel shorts are many, but finding a good pair for hiking in can be tricky. These grey (or dark grey) shorts from Royal Robbins are uncomplicated and easy to care for – and, crucially, they have plenty of stretch in them for the ascent.
Fashioned from a fabric called Alpine Melange Stretch (actually Nylon, polyester and a touch of spandex – the latter adding the stretch), we found the Alpine Roads exceptionally comfortable for everyday wear as well as when out on the trail.
Well made, strong and thick enough to be wrinkle-free, the Alpine Roads nevertheless have a pocket problem. I like to make sure my phone, keys and a passport and 100% safe wherever I am when travelling – whether that’s an airport or a mountain. The Alpine Roads just don’t do that’ there’s no way I can shove all of my valuable into one small, zipped, side pocket.
At least the hand pockets are deep enough to leave a phone in with confidence, but the Alpine Road shorts remain one rear, zipped security pocket away from perfection.
