PREVIEW: Huawei Matebook

#MWC2016, Barcelona: Can this all-in-one 12-inch tablet/computer eclipse the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and become the ultimate productivity gadget for business travellers?

We’ve been keeping an eye on Huawei ever since we reviewed the excellent Huawei P8 smartphone, and at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona the China manufacturer unleashed its masterpiece so far: Matebook.

Surface Pro 4 killer?

Essentially it’s a challenger to the Microsoft Surface Pro 4, another 12-inch tablet with aspirations to get into the briefcases of business travellers. It runs Windows 10, it’s 6.9mm thin, and it has a 10-hour battery, but its resolution of 2,160 x 1,440 pixels isn’t as high as the Surface Pro 4.  However, you can pack it with a 512GB SSD (for instant-on) and an Intel Core M7 processor.

Goodbye ultrabooks?

Can tablets like the Huawei Matebook truly replace ultrabooks like the MacBook Air and Lenovo ThinkPads? I’m not so sure – I’m keeping my MacBook for now – but when it does finally expire I somehow doubt there will be many laptops left to chose from. And with products as swish as the Huawei Matebook, that may not be such a bad thing.
