The humble hoody was made for travel, but only if you choose wisely. The ultimate hoody has to be able to cope with the unpredictability of travel; one moment you might be standing on a wind-battered coast, and the next you might be stargazing on top of a mountain. This North Face effort gives great protection against all that and more.

Gordon Lyons hoody: Full-zip design

What we like most about the Gordon Lyons hoody isn’t just the hood, but its full-zip design. There are a couple of zip pockets on each side that are fleece-lined – as are the sleeves – while there’s also a handy breast pocket that’s accessible from the outside when the thing is zipped-up.

Gordon Lyons hoody: Handy for photographers

That side-opening breast pocket is perfect for stowing a lens cap and other accessories when out in the field taking photos, while the elasticated sleeve openings keep the wind out. The hood itself is also fleece-lined and zips up to just below the mouth.

Gordon Lyons hoody: Great fit

Best of all, it’s a great fit, and packs down small enough to get into luggage pretty easily. It’s not a super-thin hiking hoody, but it’s much warmer for it. Available in black, blue, light grey, dark grey, and brick red, The North Face Men’s Gordon Lyons Full-Zip Fleece Hoodie is a great all-round hoody for travel.
