REVIEWED: Sportviz XTS Sun Core adaptable sunglasses

Designed for hikers and trekkers, these serious sunnies’ offer a great value option to have a specially made prescription insert

As anyone who wears glasses knows, summers can be blurry. Even if you have got a pair of prescription sunglasses, the chances of you having a specially-made pair for hiking and trekking are small – until now.

Custom-made

A nifty and great value idea from Sportviz, these boldly designed XTS Sun Core sunnies can take a custom-made Sportviz Inzert that contains the wearer’s exact ophthalmic prescription (single vision, bifocal and varifocal). Even better, that super-light Inzert can be easily removed and used in other Sportviz and Aquaviz products (such as swim, snorkel, dive and ski masks).

Prescription lenses

That clip-in one-piece lens takes about a week to produce, clips in to the XTS Sun Core around the nose-piece, and  can be swapped-out at a later date if/when your prescription changes. However, don’t think of the Sportviz XTS Sun Core as just some kind of specialised product; they’re also excellent all-round sunglasses for outdoors activities. They’re available in four colour schemes.

All-rounders

Full UV400 protection blocking 100% UVA and UVB, the Sportviz XTS Sun Core sunglasses feel really light. Weighing a mere 46g with that custom lens in place, there’s a wraparound design that lets little light in when on the mountain. They also have plenty of friction; what Sportviz calls Hydrogrip – a kind of plastic – on the arms is both comfy and prevented the Sportviz XTS Sun Cores from falling off however hard we tried to bounce up and down during a descent. In the box is a cleaning cloth and a hard case, which uses a top quality zip and sports a carabiner. Handy indeed.

Glare-free

Polarised and glare-free, we spent a day out in the mountains with the Sportviz XTS Sun Core with no problems and our eyes felt properly protected. Being able to see distant peaks clearly even in strong sun was a treat, too. Our only criticism is that they stand proud from the face to quite some extent, so however great they are on the mountain-side, the Sportviz XTS Sun Core sunglasses won’t win you many style points on the beach.

Price as reviewed: £49.95 (+ £25 for single vision lenses)
