Jerry-can styled and pocket-friendly fuel for phones is ripe for emergency top-ups on the go, but don’t count on more than 10 minutes
Price as reviewed: £19.99
Though strictly for emergencies only, the tiny shirt pocket or handbag-sized Devotec Fuel Micro Charger device is great for getting that crucial last few minutes from a smartphone.
19 grams of goodness
Weighing just 19g and measuring 38x27x13.5 mm, inside this green (or red) petrol jerry can device is a tiny 220 mAh battery that’s really only good for a few minutes of usage; though all Android smartphones differ in their battery size, we managed to get refuel the Samsung product we tested it on to just 10%.
Handy for Android
Easy to use and store (it even ships with a lanyard for hooking on to a keyring), the Fuel Micro Charger’s micro USB input takes minutes to recharge from any standard USB port, with an LED glowing green during charging and red when it’s full. Any Android smartphone charging cable will also charge the Fuel Micro Charger. To recharge a smartphone, just attach the protruding micro USB head, which is protected by a jerry can-style rubber cap.
No use with tablets
With no Lightning adaptor for the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5S, the Fuel Micro Charger is hence limited to Android smartphones. However, a Lightning adaptor is due later this year. Incidentally, the Fuel Micro Charger doesn’t work at all with Android tablets.
